Resident Evil 7 is finally here for us to enjoy. But, like all other AAA releases, it is plagued with bugs and annoying inconveniences that make it hard to play the game. Though the performance isn’t as bad as Assassin’s Creed Unity, a lot of players are still having problems in getting the game even to start.
In this post, I’ll be discussing the main reasons for crashes, low FPS, lags and other errors in the Resident Evil 7. This guide is for the users who have downloaded the game from Steam and will be updated according to the new bugs discovered. Please comment below to let me know what problems you are having on your PC while playing the game.
Note: Capcom has recently released Patch #2 or RE7. This patch adds support for older generation processors. Now, SSSE3 SIMD instruction set is not required to run the game. Go to Steam and update your game.
Resident Evil 7 Not Launching
The game uses a 3rd party DRM called Denuvo. You may have heard of it. It is an ‘anti-piracy’ measure integrated to the game. Though it may counter piracy for a few days, it’s more of an annoyance for the genuine users. When you launch Resident Evil 7 on your Windows PC, the game contacts Denuvo servers present in North America to check whether the copy of the game you have is genuine or not.
If that authentication fails for some reason like your crappy internet or excess load on Denuvo servers, the game won’t launch. Since the game is only a few days old, the hype is too big. A lot of people are hitting Denuvo servers while playing RE7. This is why the game is not launching. Your best bet is to wait for a few hours before trying again. This will be fixed soon as soon as the number of simultaneous players decreases.

Resident Evil 7 Freezing During Gameplay
RE7 is quite graphically demanding in PC. The game looks gorgeous. However, this comes with some performance penalty. If you have enabled high-quality textures in the graphics settings in the game, then you’ll occasionally get a hiccup during gameplay. You can turn down the texture quality if you have a GPU with less than 4GB of VRAM.
Blurry Graphics with Soft edges Fix
Depending on how high resolution you are playing RE7 at, the game can look slightly blurry. To fix that, you can either increase the resolution that you are playing at, or turn on AA. Both options come with performance penalties like decreased performance, so if you have a low-end GPU, try to mix and match which settings look best on your PC.
You should normally play at the native resolution of your monitor. The most common resolution available these days is 1080p (1920 x 1080), and the chances are that your monitor is set at that. In the Graphics Settings, make sure that the resolution is at 1080p.
Another thing to decrease blurry graphics is to enable AA (anti-aliasing). AA hits the FPS pretty hard in most cases. Resident Evil 7 supports FXAA, TAA, FXAA+TAA, and SMAA. In the graphics options, you can turn on any of these settings to decrease the blur in the game. FXAA causes the least amount of FPS dip but looks the worst while SMAA is the hardest for your GPU to show, but looks the best. Adjust the values on depending on how fast your PC is.
Api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is Missing
Api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is a file from the Universal C runtime for Windows. If you are getting this error, the chances are that your PC doesn’t have the C Runtime installed. Download the C runtime from Microsoft’s official website. Install it and restart your PC. Run the game after that, and you shouldn’t get Api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing error.
MFreadwrite.dll and/or MFplat.dll Missing Error
Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or 10 single language versions don’t come with the Media feature pack pre-installed by default. The ‘MF’ in the MFreadwrite.dll and MFplat.dll stands for Media Feature. Resident Evil 7 uses the pre-installed codecs from Windows to play certain media files and audio during the game. If the codecs are not available, you’ll get the MFreadwrite.dll or MFplat.dll missing error. Download the Media Feature Pack for N and KN versions of Windows from the given links and install them.
Run RE7 after the installation is complete and you shouldn’t get MFreadwrite.dll and MFplat.dll missing error.
Resident Evil 7 No Sound Issue
The sound problem isn’t documented by the gaming community right now for the RE7. If you are having no sound issue in the game, make sure that the volume slider for the game isn’t set to low. It looks like a bug in the game. Wait for a few days, and you might see some patch for the sound problem.
Resident Evil 7 Error – builder\\modules\\render\\os\\renderdevice dx11.cpp” 1661 Direct3D 11????? create Failed
The builder\\modules\\render\\os\\renderdevice dx11.cpp” 1661 Direct3D 11????? create Failed and Render Service dx11.cpp 5042 Error denote that your GPU (graphics card) doesn’t support DX11.
RE7 is telling you that it isn’t able to access DX11 API on your PC. This is usually a problem if don’t have DX11 runtime updates installed or you have a very old GPU.
Unfortunately, RE7 is a DX11 only game; this means that you’ll either need to upgrade your hardware or skip the game altogether. You can download DX11 updates and try running the game. If that doesn’t work, you’ll need to upgrade your hardware.
Resident Evil 7 Black Screen Problem
The black screen problem is simple to fix on PC. First, download the latest Nvidia GeForce drivers for your GPU and then open Geforce Experience application. Update your game list and click Resident Evil 7 Details. Let Geforce experience optimize the game and then enable Windowed Mode in the options. Also, turn off Frame limiting in the graphics settings of the game. If you are getting a black screen, then this might be the reason too.
Let Geforce experience optimize the game and then enable Windowed Mode in the options. Also, turn off Frame limiting in the graphics settings of the game. If you are getting a black screen, then this might be the reason too. Make sure to disable telemetry in Geforce Experience if you want your privacy.
Resident Evil 7 Texture problems
RE7 is a memory hog. If your GPU doesn’t have a lot of memory, then the game will constantly bug your PC for swapping data from memory and your disk. This can cause a lot of performance problems. If your GPU isn’t really powerful, consider tuning down the Texture settings in the game. You can try toggling the Shadow Cache too.
That’s pretty much it. If you are having any problems with Resident Evil 7 on your PC, do let me know in the comments section and I’ll let you know how you can fix that.
